How to Create a Web Survey — 5 Steps to Publish in 30 Minutes

A practical 5-step guide to publish a web survey in 30 minutes. From tool selection through question design, branching logic, optional pilot, to live release — covered in the order that doesn't get a beginner stuck.

Step 2: Build the Questions — What to ask, how to ask (10 min)

Once the tool is set, write the questions. Aim for 5–15 questions. Past 20, completion rates drop sharply, so prune ruthlessly with "does this question's answer change a decision?"

How to draft? Memo-style, one question per line

"Drafting" sounds heavy, but a memo with one question per line is enough.

Pick question types with mobile in mind

70%+ of responses come from mobile. The classic trap: a question that looks great on desktop falls apart on a phone.

Concrete example: a 7-point Likert across 5 rows in a matrix is readable on desktop. On mobile, horizontal-scroll hell kicks in — the "very dissatisfied" and "very satisfied" labels truncate at the edges, respondents can't tell which end is which, and they end up tapping the middle and bailing.

→ Cap matrices at 5 columns and 5 rows. If even that's tight, drop the matrix and split into individual questions.

The most common pitfall: double-barreled questions

The single most frequent failure mode is the double-barreled question. "Are you satisfied with the product's quality and price?" forces two judgments into one answer — respondents can't pick a side, and the data breaks.

Step 3: Order and Branching — sequencing and conditional flow (5 min)

With questions in hand, set the order and branching.

Ordering rules

  1. Start with easy questions (demographics → usage)
  2. Core questions in the middle (satisfaction, intent, evaluation)
  3. Sensitive questions later (income, health)
  4. Open-ends last (mid-survey open-ends drop completion)

Branching logic

"If they've never used product X, asking about satisfaction is pointless." That's where branching logic comes in. Four basic types:

  • Skip: jump past irrelevant questions
  • Display conditions: show only to a subset
  • Piping: insert a prior answer into the next question's text
  • Carry-forward: pass earlier selections as later options

Run a small pilot if you can. If you're tight on time, you can skip it, but even N=10–30 cuts main-fielding rework substantially.

Three things to watch in pilot

  1. Median completion time — within 4–6 minutes if you targeted 5
  2. Drop-off points — which questions trigger abandons
  3. "Hard-to-answer" open-end — one question at the end of the pilot

Step 5: Launch and 3 Settings That Move Response Rate (5 min)

Last stretch. Three settings that decide your response rate before launch:

1. Final mobile rendering check

If Step 2 was done with mobile in mind, this is just a preview-feature double-check on smartphone display. Confirm wrapping, line breaks, and tap targets are right.

2. Distribution timing

  • B2C: weekday 6–9 PM, weekend 10 AM–2 PM
  • B2B: weekday 10 AM–noon, Tuesday–Thursday is strongest

3. Incentives (if relevant)

Trust-based requests don't need them. Panel surveys do — and the research suggests smaller incentives often produce higher data quality than large ones.

The 3 Most Common Mistakes

The failure modes that show up over and over in real projects:

1. Cramming in too many questions. Real-world disaster: a customer satisfaction project that added "while we're at it" questions on gender, age band, household, income, tenure, frequency, satisfaction, improvement asks, competitor use, NPS, and free text — landed at 25 questions, completion rate dropped below 30%. Of N=200, only 60 finished, and subgroup analysis became unworkable. Ask "what action does this question's answer change?" of every question — that's the realistic pruning standard. 20 is the practical ceiling.

2. Skipping the pilot when there's time. If time allows, even N=10–30 as a small pilot is worth running. Issues that surface in main fielding cost 10×+ what they cost to fix in pilot. "Don't pilot at all" vs. "pilot at any scale" matters more than scale itself.
